Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Opening Lines

Top Ten Tuesday is a book tag hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader. This week’s prompt is “Opening Lines” (submitted by Claire @ Book Lovers Pizza). I love when a book hooks you from the first moment, so I knew I had to do this one!

Dark Academia Book Tag

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? #IMWAYR

Hello again! Hope everyone had a great weekend! I’ve been back at work, so I’ve had a bit less time to read, but I’m enjoying socializing with my coworkers and customers again. I can be a very introverted person and the time off has been a gift in some ways – for me to pause and get back to the things that bring me joy. I’ve been doing more writing, blogging and crafting than ever! But I still enjoy the occasional interaction. I really miss my Wednesday Writer’s Guild meetings at Barnes & Noble. Alas, Zoom meetings just don’t hit the same…

Photo Prompt Friday: From the Deep

In honor of the month of MerMay, I thought today’s photo prompts should be inspired by the Merfolk. Alternately thought to be alien, strange, beautiful, dangerous, dark, alluring and mysterious, these creatures of the deep have long inhabited the human consciousness. In fact, the earliest legend of mermaids was recorded in Syria in 1000 BC…

The Unpopular Opinions Book Tag.

Saw this book tag over at Emer’s A Little Haze Book Blog, who got the tag from First Line Reader’s blog.

Now, as a writer myself, I know how difficult it can be to pen a novel. And I know it will always be harder and braver to create than to criticize. Whether or not I liked a book, I always give the authors kudos for this huge undertaking. But as a reader and a Gemini, I’ve got to say I love to read the tea (gossip) on books people didn’t like and I hope you do too 😉 I mean no personal offense to any of the authors and my opinions are just that and should be taken with a grain of salt.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? #IMWAYR

Happy Monday! Hope everyone’s doing well! I’m back at work as of last week, so it’s been a bit harder to post as much, but I’m going to try my best. Once again, I’m a mood reader, so I didn’t read what I planned on reading this week…

Room to Breathe: Negative Space in Writing.

“Space is the breath of art.”

American architect Frank Lloyd Wright

Nowadays, a lot of us have had the experience of reading a fast-paced, action-packed book that jumps from one disaster to the next with no room to breathe. And according to most writing advice, escalating plot tension is the “correct” way to write. But it is not a reflection of real life. While many events may happen to us in a row, there is also downtime between events for us to grieve or process changes. There is also a baseline “before”, a status quo before things change. Life before the zombie apocalypse /oppressive government regime/ regulation of magic / dragon extinction, etc…

In a book, these “before” and “during” spaces give the reader room to breathe. A temporary release of the tension allows readers to process what they read and to form strong attachments to your characters. Repeat after me: A story needs downtime. A story needs room to breathe.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? #IMWAYR

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a great weekend! It was sunny and warm here, which was a nice change from all the rain. Had a little BBQ in the backyard last night, which was really fun. I had to put some of my planned reads on the back burner this week because some of my library holds became available and I received some E-ARCs from Netgalley that I want to review.
