It’s definitely been a minute since I updated! I thought I’d have more free time come summer, and while that’s true, I underestimated how much I would just want to rest. I worked at my school summer camp last month, which was a blast, but also exhausting. My old car from 2003 also finally gave up, so I was on the hunt to lease something. I finally decided on a white Volkswagen Tiguan and I’ve been really enjoying it so far. Other than that, it’s been a relatively uneventful summer, hanging out with my friends, working on creative outlets, making and jarring jam, and catching up on my Goodreads challenge. How are all of you? What have you been up to this summer?
WHAT I READ LAST WEEK:
I’ve been in a kind of dark, murder mystery / horror mood when it comes to reading. Most recently, I read Megan Abbott’s latest book, The Turnout, which was a 3-star read for me. I love her writing, but this was definitely not my favorite by her. I also impulse read the comic, It Eats What Feeds It, on Hoopla. It was short, but I really enjoyed the illustration and Southern gothic horror setting. The Final Girl Support Group is the first book I’ve read by Grady Hendrix and I really liked it. Despite not being too into the slasher genre (I prefer scary books over movies), I was still able to enjoy it without knowing all the references.
WHAT I’M READING NOW:

I’m finally, finally starting A Master of Djinn by P. Djeli Clark. I like his writing and I’ve been really looking forward to this book, but I’ve been doing a lot of mood-reading, so I’ve put it off.
WHAT I’M READING NEXT:
I’m not sure what I’ll pick up next, but This Poison Heart, Gearbreakers, and Blood Like Magic, are a few books I’ve been looking foward to.
What are you guys reading? Have you read any of these books? How’s your summer going? Leave me a comment and…

Until next time,

Ooo I hope you love a master of djinn, it was so good!

I really enjoyed it! I’d definitely recommend it. Very different to most other magic world books I’ve read.
Thanks for the comment! x

I’ve been procrastinating A Master of Djinn also. I own the book (and have since it came out) so I have no excuse. I hope to get to This Poison Heart soon, too!

Event after event for us. But I have kept somewhat up with my writing. I find this creative outlet helps me unwind and relax me and brings me absolute joy. My reading is here and there. OOO jarring jam, what flavors?

That’s great you’ve been keeping up with writing! I wish I could say the same. Keep it up! So far, we’ve made: blueberry, strawberry, plum, and peach. Will probably do fig once our tree grows enough.

This summer has been allll about the dark murder mysteries for me! I am so happy I found your blog! Thank you for sharing these because I just finished a crime thriller and I needed something new to take it’s place. My recent read (comes highly recommended) and its called “West Texas Dead: A Kailey and Shinto Mystery” by crime author Frances Hight. It is book one in the series so I am happy to know that more will be coming! When detectives Kailey and Shinto investigate a murder, they think they have an open and shut case. Little do they know the rabbit hole they will head down is full of twists and surprises. I am also happy to say I was really got invested in the characters, I have always loved strong female protagonists especially if they’re relatable, vulnerable and realistic. The author did a wonderful job of humanizing them and really getting to the root of their motivations… It was also a unique read in that it was full of dark humor which I loved!
