One Direction Book Tag

It was recently the ten-year anniversary of One Direction forming as a band on the seventh season of the UK’s X-Factor. They were only together for six years, but really made a mark on the music scene and on me. I found this tag on Lauren’s page (Lala’s Book Reviews). You can check out her post here. Thanks to thecritiquesofafangirl for creating this tag. Go check out her post! Also, I recently did a Louis Tomlinson Walls book tag if anyone’s interested in his solo work!

Louis Tomlinson – A Character With a Rocky Past

Born to a teen mom, Louis Tomlinson’s father left him as a baby. The oldest of seven siblings, he had to take on a lot of responsibility early on. He struggled with his confidence in the band and never got any solos, so he made up for it by becoming the band’s most prolific lyricist. A self-professed “momma’s boy”, Louis was best friends with his mother, Johanna, until her untimely death from leukemia at the age of 43 in 2016. He later lost his younger sister, Felicite, to a heart attack at just 18 years old in 2019.

Despite all his struggles, Louis is a humble, grounded, kind-hearted person. Louis has always turned his pain into strength, channeling his grief into beautiful lyrics. He’s an active patron of the Eden Dora Trust and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. He held a Believe in Magic Cindarella Ball that raised £2,000,000 for children with terminal illnesses.

I think of Louis as Kaz Brekker from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows. A natural-born leader who has overcome tough circumstances, including the death of his parents and a younger brother, and who is interested in doing the right thing, no matter the cost. Plus, they both have great hair and lethal cheekbones!

Zayn Malik – A Morally Grey Character / Dark, Mysterious, Brooding Male Who You Love

Zayn was originally billed as the “bad boy” of the band (presumably because he was the only non-white member) and mysterious (presumably because he wasn’t allowed to talk about his Muslim background). But Zayn is essentially a cream puff covered in tattoos. He bought his parents a house, donated £10,000 to a girl for cancer treatment, £500,000 to Comic Relief, painted a “Gromit” that raised £26,000 for Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal and so much more.

Zayn is artistic, fashionable, introverted, sensitive, intelligent and a professed comic-book geek. His sensual vocals and intensely creative music video concepts make Mind of Mine one of my favorite albums of all time.

I’ve always pictured Zayn as Ronan Lynch from Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys – dreamy, tattooed, family-oriented, loves animals and…a bit of a tortured artist type.

Liam Payne – An Underrated Character

Liam Payne is a long underrated member of the band. Despite his fantastic voice, he was voted off a previous season of the X-factor. He was bullied most of his childhood and dealt with medical problems on and off. Liam was often viewed as the ‘dad’ of the band, responsible and rule-abiding. Gentle and sweet, with muscles to boot, Liam is the himbo we are all rooting for.

I think I’d compare Liam to Gale Hawthorne from The Hunger Games series. Tough, fiercely devoted to his family and the girl he loves, hardworking and willing to occasionally bend the rules for those he loves. Overlooked by Katniss in favor of Peeta.

Harry Styles – The Heartthrob

Harry was one of my favorites in One Direction, but our relationship has soured over the years – ever since it was revealed he was groomed for breakout stardom and ultimately broke up the band at the cost of his relationships with the other members. I think we’ve gotten tons of awesome solo music from all of them, but I’ll always have a soft spot for those five boys on the stairs. Harry has achieved a lot critical acclaim, though and seems to be the most “popular”.

I chose Henry “Monty” Montague from The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee. Monty is young, handsome and charming, but at times arrogant and out of touch. He’s burned bridges in favor of being a playboy and traveling the world, but all of his rebellion stems from a cushioned place of wealth and privilege. I do like Monty, because his character grows throughout the story, mostly through his relationship with Percy, his biracial, ill best friend.

Niall Horan – The Underdog Who Reached the Stars

Niall has always been the King of Chill. While other members of the band were involved in various scandals, Niall always flew under the radar. His steady presence, down-to-earth personality and snarky Irish humor have always endeared Niall to me. Niall’s definitely the member you most want to have a beer with. And his first solo album, Flicker, completely blew me away.

For Niall, I’m going to say Ron Weasley from JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series. A side character for sure, but a force in his own right. Both Niall and Ron are dependable, loyal, funny, cheerful and not afraid to wear a cozy jumper.

Up All Night – The Best Debut Novel/ First Book in a Series That You Have Read

I love Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials and The Golden Compass really draws you in!

Take Me Home – A Book / Series That Feels Like Home

The Secret History by Donna Tartt will always be one of my favorite books. From the sumptuous prose to the university setting, the found-family group of friends and the murder and lies that slowly unravel them.

Midnight Memories – A Book You Stayed Up Reading Until The Early Hours of Morning

I really loved Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim. It was a real page turner and was and fun to read!

Four – Best Squad / Team in a Book

The 312 Squad from the Aurora Cycle by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman. Love this group of rebel space-fighters!

Made in the A.M. – A Book / Series That Occupied Your Ever Waking Thought.

I grew up with Harry Potter and even dabbled in some Harry Potter fan-fiction once upon a time. Its characters really resonated with readers over several generations and it will probably stay with me a long time.

I tag:

Anyone that wants to do this!

What’s your favorite One Direction song? Who’s your favorite member? Which album do you still rock out to? What’s your favorite solo album?

Until next time,

I am definitely gonna check out the Walls Book Tag, I sore Louis’ solo work!

I agree with everything you said about every member of 1D, the management really tried to screw the boys and bend them to what they thought the world wanted these boys to be and doing that they hurt all of them abs whenever I think of that it makes my blood boil, I’m anger

I really need to read works by Leigh Bardugo and Maggie Stiefvater, I’ve heard so many good things about their books. Liam and gale just fit and Harry as Monty and Niall as Ron is awesome 😻
