Photo Prompt Friday: From the Deep

In honor of the month of MerMay, I thought today’s photo prompts should be inspired by the Merfolk. Alternately thought to be alien, strange, beautiful, dangerous, dark, alluring and mysterious, these creatures of the deep have long inhabited the human consciousness. In fact, the earliest legend of mermaids was recorded in Syria in 1000 BC…

Even fantasy must have some basis in reality to be believable. How can you write realistic mermaids? What would their body mass be to compensate for the cold? How would they breathe underwater? How do their bodies adjust to the pressures of the deep? How do they see in the dark? What do they eat? What creatures do they fear? What natural enhancements do they have to be successful predators – nails, teeth, stealth, etc? Do they sleep laying down or floating upright? Do they lay eggs or give live birth? Look to natural sciences for inspiration…

I hope these photos inspire you to write something! As always, leave me a comment. I love to hear from you!

Until next time,

  1. I don’t know if I already said, Leigh, that I love Mermaids, and one in particular.
Sadly my magic was inadequate, and she slipped away, back to where she was happier.
But she inspired me to write many stories and poems, and to appreciate what is different, and more.
If you look on on the right-hand side of my blog page, you will see someone very like her on the cover of my second e-book.
Thank you for reminding me with this fabulous set of images.
