Saw this book tag over at Emer’s A Little Haze Book Blog, who got the tag from First Line Reader’s blog.
Now, as a writer myself, I know how difficult it can be to pen a novel. And I know it will always be harder and braver to create than to criticize. Whether or not I liked a book, I always give the authors kudos for this huge undertaking. But as a reader and a Gemini, I’ve got to say I love to read the tea (gossip) on books people didn’t like and I hope you do too 😉 I mean no personal offense to any of the authors and my opinions are just that and should be taken with a grain of salt.
A popular book or series that you didn’t like.

I’ll admit to reading these books when I was younger, but I just find most of this series reads like Harry Potter fan-fiction. Which, well, it sort of is.
A popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love.

I read the Twilight series and while it wasn’t the best, I also felt like it became a target because it appealed to young, teen girls, which is totally sexist. I really enjoyed the Host because I’d never read anything like it before. It definitely satisifed the part of me that loves to read post-apocalyptic books and gave me a fresh angle on a love story.
A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person you did NOT want them to end up with OR an OTP that you don’t like.

To be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of the protagonist or her love interest in this book. I was really rooting for the sensitive, artistic side character who got a short shrift in this book.
A popular book genre that you hardly reach for.

Biographies, but really just non-fiction books in general. My dad loves a historical biography, but I find them a bit dry. I keep wondering when the dragons are going to show up. Which I think is a good sign I should stick to sci-fi/fantasy…
A popular or beloved character that you do not like.

Celaena Sardothien is just a badly written heroine. She doesn’t bear any signs of the trauma of her past. She’s supposedly the perfect assassin, but contradicts that at every turn. She’s all over the place in terms of characterization…For me, all the contradictions made her unbelievable instead of relatable or interesting.
A popular author that you can’t seem to get into.

Sorry, not sorry. I generally love Fantasy YA, but Cassandra Clare’s books are just not for me…
A popular book trope that you’re tired of seeing.

While there are times in life that love comes to us quickly, or at least lust or attraction, this trope happens way too often in YA books.
A popular series that you have no interest in reading.

Nothing against it, but never could get into this series…which seemed like a more poorly written version of the Hunger Games.
The saying goes “The book is always better than the film”, but what film or TV show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

Loved the movie, but couldn’t connect to the book. The writing felt too much like a summation.
Do you agree with any of my unpopular opinions? Disagree? Have you done this book tag? Leave me a comment! x
Until next time,

I loved The Host too! The premise was fascinating and I’ve still not read anything like it in the years that have passed since.

I loved the Host! I wish there were more books! I’m also not a huge Cassandra Clare fan. I liked the first 3 books to the Moral Instruments but now I’m just over the whole shadowhunter thing. I want more originality.

Personally totally agree w u about Celeana/Aelin… I just did not love her as a character and was also not a huge Rowan fan. For me the highlight of the TOG series was Elide and Lorcan!! I also have no interest in reading the Divergent series lol! And yes The Notebook a wayy better movies u can’t top those characters chemistry. Great tag ☺️

I hear you about city of bones. I actually quite liked the host as well. I don’t read historical biographies either. And I understand not liking Celaena- she’s not especially likeable. Divergent really isn’t worth reading tbh. Great post!
