April: Camp NaNoWriMo

Happy April everyone! I’m happy to report the weather is finally sunny here. While I have some free time, I’ve been trying to work on the last few chapters of my novel. Since it’s good to have a goal and something to work towards, I’ve decided to join April’s Camp NaNoWriMo.

What is NaNoWriMo, you ask? Well, NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month. And spoiler: It’s in November! The goal is to write 50,000 words throughout the month of November, resulting in a novel-length work of fiction. Due to the website’s massive success, NaNoWriMo now runs “camps” in April and July. These camps are like online summer camps for writers to work towards their word-count goal while supporting and being supported by other writers.

NaNoWriMo Camp is more flexible when it comes to word count goals. It’s just meant as a bit of fun and to keep you motivated and connected to a writing community.

MY PLAN 

My book Weave the Stars (Craftworker’s Guild #1) is a Young Adult Fantasy Novel. I’ve already written over 70,000 words, so I’m more than on my way, but I’m hoping to write some crucial scenes the book is missing as of right now. The goal is to have a great draft ready to pitch to agents and publishers by this summer.

MY GOAL

I’ve set a goal of 15,000 words, which will put my first draft at about 85,000 words when all is said and done. This is a pretty conservative goal of 500 words a day, far from NaNoWriMo’s usual 1,667 words a day. As I’ve started many NaNoWriMos, but never actually completed one, I wanted to be realistic and give myself a real shot at reaching my goal.

I’m not looking at my progress in terms of chapters or even word count, but of crucial scenes I need to write. My book is told from two points of view and I have three scenes to write from Eli’s point-of-view and four scenes from Nur’s. I’ve done a brief outline of each of these scenes and where they will need to go in the novel.
